Chausath Yogini Temple- The Shrine at a Hilltop, Must Visit Heritage Site in India

Chausath Yogini Temple is one of the ancient heritage sites in India which is situated on a hilltop in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The temple’s name is derived from the Hindi word ‘Chausath’, which means ’64’. This temple is dedicated to 64 Yoginis, who are considered as the incarnations of the Mother Goddess, Shakti. It is located near the river Narmada.

During the reign of Kalachuri Dynasty at 10th century the temple was constructed. The local granite was mainly used to built the temple. After a while it was destroyed and deformed by the Mughal invaders.

Since the temple is on the hill top one has to climb about 150 steps to reach the temple. The main shrine has the idols of Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati, seen riding on the sacred bull, Nandi in the temple and 64 shrines for each yoginis in a circular motion around the main shrine. The shrine is constructed in an open patio. One can witness that the idols of yoginis depict an exclusive posture that are elegantly carved.

There is a clear resemblance to the temples of Khajuraho in structure. Though the temple has been damaged in some measures it surely speaks great about the age old dynasties that ruled in Jabalpur.
