Shivpuri is a city in Shivpuri district located in Madhya Pradesh. It is 121 kms away from Gwalior which is in the Gwalior Division of the state. Shivpuri has borders with Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, east and west respectively.
The name Shivpuri is derived from Lord Shiva, hindu god.
As per history of this town, the Mughal Emperors used to visit the thick forest of Shivpuri for hunting and camping. Akbar, mughal emperor, captured herds of elephants for his stable and then later used it at his capital.
As time passed by it later became a part of Marathas and part of Scindia dynasty of Gwalior state. The historical monuments that are in Shivpuri were made by Scindia rulers due to which the significance has been increased.
The word chhatri means an umbrella. The Scindia Chhatris is one of the important attraction for visitors. It is a blend of both Mughal and Hindu culture. There is a garden in the backyard that has the royal tombs of the Scindia. These tombs are enclosed by huge trees, green orchards and blooming bushes emulating the Mughal style of architecture.
