Khichan is a village located in Jodhpur district of Rajasthan state. This village is famous for the bird sanctuary, which is situated at the outskirts of the village specially the demoiselle cranes that visit every year. This sanctuary serves as home to three types of birds called Karkara, Kunch and Kurjan that migrate from South west Europe. Khichan has a effective Jain population.
In the month of August these birds migrate to India to avoid the cold winters of Europe and stays up to the following year March. The Khichan Bird Sanctuary is known world wide as the Demoiselle Crane village.
These birds has a height of about three feet. At present this village hosts home for about 9000 Demoiselle Cranes. Most of the foreign and native tourists who are bird watchers come to this place during the migrating season. Khichan has successfully acquired international recognition in the tourist map. This village was also featured in the Birding World Magazine.
Reaching Khichan is easy by means of taxis. The birds are treated as honoured guests by the villagers.
