Palitana is a city situated in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. It is 54 km away from Bhavnagar city. It is considered to be a major pilgrimage place for Jains. Palitana is identified with Jain legends and history. Shantrunjaya Hill is the place where the first of the Jain tirthankaras, Adinath is said to have meditated, then later the Palitana temples were constructed.
Palitana is the world’s only mountain that has many temples, hence considered to be the most sacred pilgrimage place (tirtha) by the Jain community. There are 863 temples.
Shantrunjaya Hills are located by the Palitana city. It consists of hundreds of Palitana temples. The name Shatrunjaya comes from a Mount Shatrunjaya where it is loctaed which means “which conquers enemies”. The history states that the hill is a part of the Himalayas. A distance of 13 km leads down a long path to Adipur Valley. It is the holiest pilgrimage sites for the Jains.
One can reach to Palitana very easily because of the available mode of transports. Hourly buses are available from Bhavnagar to Palitana. Palitana has a small railway station connection with Bhavnagar. The nearest airport to Palitana is Bhavnagar.
