Sringeri is a temple town situated in the Chikmagalpur district of Karnataka. It is located on the banks of the Tunga River. It offers very beautiful and attractive views of the valleys and waterfalls around the area. Sringeri is a world famous destination that houses the Sri Sringeri Sarada Peetham. The nearest airport is at Mangalore. It is 328 km from Bangalore.
The Sarada Peetham was established in the 1st millennium CE, by the revered spiritual leader Aadi Sankaracharya and installed an image of Sarada with Sri Chakra in front of her, is acknowledged as one of the Shakti Sthalams of India. Sankara’s disciple Sureshwaracharya was the first head of the Sringeri Peetham.
Vidyashankara, who was the head of this Peetham for 105 years from 1228 CE to 1333 CE is considered to be one of the greatest Gurus of this Peetham. Vidyaranya who headed the peetham from 1331 CE to 1386 CE was another exceptional leader, who was contributory in the establishment of the Vijayanagara Empire.
The Vidyashankara temple at Sringeri was built in memory of Guru Vidyashankara by Vidyaranya, with the support of the Vijayanagar rulers in the 14th century. One can see at Sarada temple, the golden image of Sarada installed. The temple also houses ruby images of Venugopala and Srinivasa and a Nandi made out of a large pearl.
The architectural features of the temple are combined with Hoysala and Dravida. There are six doorways leading into the temple. The twelve pillars in the mandapam are named as the Raasi pillars, and are arranged in a way that the sun’s rays fall on each of them, in the order of the solar months. The Sharada Navratri Festival during autumn attracts thousands of devotees from all over the country to Sringeri. Since there are many other ancient temples around Sringeri, it sees a huge number of religious tourists almost throughout the year.
